Animal Needs

This piece is compiled with a mix of creatures from various faunas.

The animals were photographed by Paalu when they were either free, caged, domesticated, dead, alive, or skeletal.

The images of the animals were altered digitally, using experimental techniques to ‘color the canvas’ — making it difficult to identify some of the animals.

In this piece you can find Siberian tiger heads, narwhal tusks, feline heads, skinned caribou carcasses, musk ox horns & skulls, southern ground hornbill heads, Barbary macaque heads, harp seal skulls, lemur tails, monarch butterflies, Galapagos tortoise skin, western gull heads, common raven feathers, sanderling seabird wings, Caribbean flamingos, and brown striped spiral seashells — all tailored to fit the imaginative faculty of Paalu.

Paalu’s life is enriched by animals in many ways.

Paalu needs experiences, so he goes whale-watching in the fiord.

He needs to eat, so he hunts musk ox or buys marinated herring at the supermarket.

He needs to feel good about himself, so he brings the spider in his room outside, instead of killing it.

He needs unconditional love, so he has a loving cat.

He needs to look good, so he buys a down jacket from Hugo Boss.

He needs to decorate his home, so he hangs seal skulls & caribou antlers on his wall.

He needs to make art, so he takes pictures of animals.

He has to make money, so he works on a fishing ship for many months at a time.
