Million

2018

A river amongst a million mountains

Million was made in 2018 in Chicago, Illinois.

The landscape consists mostly of images from boat and hunting trips between Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq in Greenland — however, Million is a boundless amalgamation of many sources of material.

It was composed with pictures of fluorescent masks, fluorescent illustrations, family & friends, animals from various faunas, and Paalu’s confirmation.

Million did not take as long to create as Lost or Home, each taking +140 hours to finish — if they ever were fully completed.

But Million still required much effort to convey the depth he imagined.

Million was an attempt to actualize a vision of a deep, nocturnal and luminous landscape.

But Million was also an attempt to break loose of his tendency to avoid depth, often resulting in 2 dimensional depictions of his imagination.

Paalu found himself undergoing inner conflicts in Chicago, where he was challenged by the ‘what do you do’ questions, oft answered proudly by most people who are good at their profession, or just assume they are.

His words carried an irksome guilt when responding to such questions, often avoiding to mention his artistic endeavor, that was highly appreciated by those who knew about it.

He felt it was much easier to talk about his past as a fisherman, since he wasn’t conflicted about the purpose of working tirelessly for months; which was money, by the way.

The ghoulish masks scattered everywhere around the nightly landscape are indicative of the internal dangers awaiting at every peak or corner, when going to dark and undiscovered places within.

The cyan mask in the foreground welcomes the viewer, yet also carries a frightening expression, warning the viewer that there are things you’d rather avoid facing once you look within your inner landscape — but by looking, you might find the only river flowing amongst your million mountains and demons.
